Course Description Guide

We are delighted that you plan to attend Wando High School. Wando has a rich tradition of excellence and success in academics, athletics, and student activities. We expect you to continue that tradition.

Listen carefully to the advice of your eighth grade teachers and select courses suited for your academic skills and interests. Although courses are organized in two paths (Honors and College Prep) students may select courses from more than one level. Students typically have four classes per day with each class lasting 90 minutes.

Some ninth grade courses meet on an A/B day rotating schedule for the year. Other classes meet daily for one semester. Students will then take different courses the next semester during that time period. To enter tenth grade the next year, you must earn at least six credits during the ninth grade year which must include English and Mathematics.

In addition to the Ninth Grade Academy, Wando is divided into four Schools of Study. Your eighth grade counselors have worked with you and your parents in completing your Individual Graduation Plan to select a cluster of interest. As you progress through Wando, you will choose a School of Study and a major.

Wando guidance counselors will come to your middle school late in the spring to register rising ninth graders. Eighth grade teachers will recommend course levels for each student. Wando guidance counselors will use that information as they meet with students and parents to select courses. Please see the back side of this sheet for course selection tips.

Rising ninth grade students and parents are invited to attend the Wando Curriculum Fair (date TBA) where Wando teachers and counselors will be available to answer questions regarding courses. This drop-in event will be held in the Wando Cafeteria from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Sincerely,
