What: An optional  Honors Geometry and Honors English I Skills Institute held over two half-days
When: July 10-11 or July 24-25; Geometry: 8:30 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.; English: 10:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Why: To sharpen Math and English skills and best prepare for our rigorous Honors Programs

Fee: $25.00 to attend both the Math and English sessions; $12.50 if you choose to attend only one of the sessions (either Math or English).  Cash or check made payable to Wando High School is due at time of registration.  Scholarships are available for students of free/reduced lunch status; contact Ms. Cheryl Swinton at 881-8200 ext. 18241 for scholarship consideration.  Please note:  space is limited to the first 45 applicants for each session.  Choose your session carefully as any changes will be limited.

Geometry – Day 1 and Day 2:  This workshop will review the algebra skills needed to be successful in Honors Geometry.  Major emphasis will be on simplifying and working with radicals; solving, graphing and writing linear equations; solving systems of equations; solving quadratic equations using the quadratic equations with simplified radicals; and application problems.  This workshop will prepare you to complete your summer assignments and to be successful on the test over the summer work.

English – Day 1 and Day 2:  This workshop will concentrate on techniques designed to maximize your effectiveness relative to reading and writing.  Focus will be on strategies to help you before, during and after you read as the literature in Honors English I is complex.  This session will help you become an organized, efficient writer as we work on the importance of outlining and pre-writing, crafting a thesis statement, and revising for paragraph unity and sentence fluency in advance of both the academic and analytical essays you will write in Honors English I.  We will take what you have learned about reading and writing and discuss MLA formatting  practices, what makes an academic source valid, and how to properly cite text evidence in a formal paper.  Along the way, we will examine the pitfalls of plagiarism and how to avoid  them.  Mastering these skills will give you a head start towards successfully completing the papers you will write in both Honors English I and Honors Global Studies I (or AP Human Geography).

How to Register:  Please complete this form and mail or bring it - Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. - to the address listed below, along with your registration fee (detailed above).
